Agra Travel Guide: The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort & Fatehpur Sikri

Agra is home to India's most beloved monument — the Taj Mahal, the 17th-century marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Three hours south of Delhi by India's Gatimaan Express train, Agra was the Mughal capital from 1556 to 1648 and remains a UNESCO triple-site: the Taj Mahal, the imposing Agra Fort, and the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri 40 km west all earned their World Heritage status. For travellers on the Golden Triangle, Agra is the unmissable centrepiece.

History & Cultural Influence

Agra became the Mughal capital in 1556 when Emperor Akbar moved his seat from Delhi. The first three of India's great Mughal emperors — Akbar (1556–1605), Jahangir (1605–1627) and Shah Jahan (1628–1658) — ruled from Agra, building the Agra Fort and many of the Mughal-era gardens and tombs along the Yamuna river. The Taj Mahal was begun by Shah Jahan in 1632 after the death of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal in childbirth; it took 22 years and 22,000 craftsmen to complete and reportedly cost ₹32 million (the modern equivalent of around USD 1 billion).

The Mughal capital moved back to Delhi in 1648 when Shah Jahan completed Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi). Agra declined politically but remained a centre of artisan craft — particularly the pietra dura (semi-precious-stone inlay) tradition still practised today. The Taj Mahal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 alongside Agra Fort. Fatehpur Sikri — Akbar's short-lived 1571–1585 capital, abandoned due to water shortages — was inscribed in 1986. Together they make Agra the densest cluster of Mughal heritage anywhere.
