Cameron Highlands Travel Guide: Tea Estates, Mossy Forest & Strawberry Farms
Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's premier hill station — a 1,500m cool-climate plateau in the central Titiwangsa Range, three hours north of Kuala Lumpur. Founded by British surveyor William Cameron in 1885 as a colonial retreat from the tropical heat, the highlands today are the country's heartland for Ceylon-style tea (BOH and Cameron Valley estates), strawberry farms, rose gardens and the mysterious 200-million-year-old Mossy Forest. With a year-round 15–25°C climate, mock-Tudor heritage hotels and the spectacular Cameron Highlands–Kuala Lumpur scenic drive, the highlands are Malaysia's most-loved cool-weather escape.

History & Cultural Influence
Cameron Highlands was discovered by British surveyor William Cameron in 1885 while mapping the colonial boundary between Pahang and Perak. By the 1920s the cool climate had attracted British planters who built the country's first tea estates — Cameron Valley (1928), Boh (1929) and Bharat (1933). The British and their Tamil tea-pickers built the mock-Tudor hotels (The Smokehouse, Ye Olde Smokehouse), the strawberry farms and the rose gardens that still define the area's charm.
Modern Cameron Highlands has grown into a 720 km² agricultural heartland producing 30% of Malaysia's vegetables and almost all of its strawberries, roses and tea. Three main towns — Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang — sit along the spine of the road. The remarkable 200-million-year-old Mossy Forest near Gunung Brinchang (the highest road point in Peninsular Malaysia) is now protected by a 2024 boardwalk. The drive up via Tapah remains slow but rewarding; the new East-West Highway from Ipoh is faster.
