Jodhpur Travel Guide: The Blue City, Mehrangarh Fort & Umaid Bhawan

Jodhpur — the "Blue City" — is Rajasthan's second-largest city and one of India's most photogenic urban panoramas. The colossal Mehrangarh Fort, perched on a 120m sheer sandstone cliff, towers over a sea of indigo-blue painted houses in the Old Town below — a colour palette unique to the Brahmin quarter of one of the world's great hill forts. Add the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace (the world's sixth-largest private royal residence and now a Taj hotel), the Mehrangarh's breathtaking RIFF folk-music festival, and the gateway to the Thar Desert, and Jodhpur is the most spectacular fort city in India.

History & Cultural Influence

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore Rajput clan, who chose this strategic spot on the edge of the Thar Desert for its defensibility. The Mehrangarh Fort was built immediately on the dramatic 120m sandstone cliff; it has never been conquered. Successive Rathore maharajas extended the fort's 36 palaces, courtyards and seven gates over the next four centuries, making Mehrangarh one of South Asia's greatest hill forts and a UNESCO Tentative World Heritage Site.

The Old Town's famous blue houses date to the 17th century — initially the Brahmin (priestly caste) painted their homes indigo blue to mark caste status; the practice spread to others over time. The colour also keeps interiors cool and (locals say) repels insects. The Umaid Bhawan Palace was built between 1929 and 1943 by Maharaja Umaid Singh as a famine-relief project; the 347-room Art Deco palace still houses the royal family in one wing, with another converted to the Taj Hotel and a museum.

How many days should I spend in Jodhpur?

Two to three nights — one for Mehrangarh and the Blue City, one for Jaswant Thada and Umaid Bhawan, one for an Osian desert overnight or Jaisalmer extension.

Why are the houses blue?

Originally a Brahmin caste-marker (the blue indicated priestly homes), the colour was thought to keep buildings cool and repel insects. The custom spread; today Brahmpuri remains the most colour-saturated neighbourhood.

When is the best time to visit Jodhpur?

October to March for cool dry weather. October for the RIFF folk-music festival. Avoid April–June for extreme desert heat.

Should I stay at Umaid Bhawan Palace?

For once-in-a-lifetime travellers, yes — it's one of the world's grandest hotels, ranked among Taj's top properties globally. Even non-guests can take high tea or dinner.

Jodhpur or Jaisalmer for the desert?

Jodhpur is on the desert edge with Mehrangarh Fort and easy day trips to Osian. Jaisalmer (300 km west) is deeper in the Thar with the golden sandstone Jaisalmer Fort. Many premium Rajasthan tours include both.
