Kratie Travel Guide: Mekong River Dolphins & Off-the-Beaten-Path Cambodia

Kratie is Cambodia's sleepy Mekong river town and one of the last sanctuaries on earth for the critically endangered Irrawaddy river dolphin — fewer than 90 individuals remain in the wild, with a small population that lives year-round at Kampi Pool 15 km north of Kratie. Add a charming French-colonial waterfront, the spectacular Wat Sorsor Muoy Roi temple (101 columns), and easy access to the Mekong's tiny Koh Trong island, and Kratie is one of Cambodia's most underrated off-the-beaten-path destinations.

History & Cultural Influence

Kratie has been a Mekong trading post for centuries, and the French built it into a regional capital in the late 19th century. The riverside French colonial buildings, the wide tree-lined boulevards and the spectacular sunsets define the town's character.

The town's headline attraction is its tiny remnant population of Irrawaddy dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris). Once abundant throughout the Mekong from southern China to Vietnam, the species was decimated by Khmer Rouge fishing-grenade hunting and gillnetting. WWF-led conservation efforts since 1997 have stabilised the Cambodian population at around 80–90; Kratie's Kampi Pool is the most reliable place in the world to see them.
