Musandam Travel Guide: Norway of Arabia, Khasab Fjords & Dhow Cruises

Musandam is Oman's spectacular northern exclave — a rugged 1,800 km² peninsula separated from the rest of Oman by 70 km of UAE territory, jutting into the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Often called the "Norway of Arabia" for its dramatic limestone fjords (khors) plunging into turquoise water, Musandam offers traditional half-day dhow cruises with dolphin pods, secluded swimming bays, mountain-top viewpoints over the strait, and the chance to step inside the world's busiest oil-shipping waterway. Reached via a 2-hour drive from Dubai or a domestic Oman Air flight from Muscat, Musandam is the perfect extension to any Oman or UAE itinerary.

History & Cultural Influence

Musandam has been a strategic peninsula for over two millennia, controlling the Strait of Hormuz through which 30% of the world's seaborne oil still flows. The Persian Empire, Portuguese (who built the fort at Khasab in 1623), Omani Sultanate and finally the British all coveted the peninsula. Today around 35,000 Omanis live in Musandam, most around the capital Khasab. The peninsula remains genuinely remote — its only land border is with the UAE, and a Saudi-built coastal road links Khasab to Dibba (UAE) for the first time only in 2008.

The Musandam landscape is the dominant attraction. The Al Hajar Mountains plunge 1,800m down to the Arabian Sea, creating six dramatic khors (fjords) — Khor ash Sham, Khor Hablain, Khor an Najd, Khor Habalayn, Khor al Najd and Khor al Maqlab — that look strikingly like Norwegian fjords transplanted to Arabia. Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins regularly swim alongside traditional Omani dhow tour boats; humpback dolphins are also seen. Snorkelling in the fjords reveals coral gardens and tropical fish; the famous "Telegraph Island" was a British East India Telegraph station from 1864 — the origin of the phrase "going round the bend."
