Sihanoukville & Koh Rong Travel Guide: Cambodian Islands & Gulf of Thailand
Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem — twin islands off Cambodia's south coast — are the country's most beautiful beach destinations: powdery white-sand beaches, glassy turquoise water and a deliberately slow-developed eco-tourism approach that has kept them refreshingly untouched. The mainland gateway, Sihanoukville, has become Chinese-casino-developed and is now mostly a transit port rather than a beach destination. Once you take the 45-minute fast-boat to Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia's most relaxed chapter begins.

History & Cultural Influence
Sihanoukville was developed as Cambodia's only deep-water port in the 1950s and was the country's main beach destination through the 2000s. From around 2016, however, Chinese investment transformed it almost overnight into a casino-and-skyscraper city, displacing tourism. Today most international travellers transit Sihanoukville to reach the islands and don't linger on the mainland.
The islands are a different story. Koh Rong (the larger, 78 km²) and Koh Rong Samloem (52 km²) sit 25 km off the coast. They remained almost uninhabited until 2010; even today the islands have no airports, limited electricity outside resort hours, and minimal road infrastructure. Eco-luxury resorts like Song Saa Private Island and Royal Sands Koh Rong have pioneered low-impact luxury; backpacker beach huts on Koh Tui beach (Koh Rong) and Saracen Bay (Koh Rong Samloem) keep the budget option alive. The bioluminescent plankton glow in the dark, the snorkelling is excellent, and the slow-island pace is a perfect Cambodia finale.
