Sukhothai Travel Guide: Thailand's First Capital & Loy Krathong Birthplace

Sukhothai is the birthplace of Thai civilisation — the first capital of the Thai people, founded in 1238, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site where Thai script, Theravada Buddhism and the unique Sukhothai Buddha style were all born. Today the 70 km² Sukhothai Historical Park is one of the most beautifully landscaped ancient sites in Asia: lotus-fringed ponds, lawn-set chedis and serene walking Buddhas, all explored on a bicycle. Less visited than Ayutthaya, Sukhothai rewards travellers who include it on a deeper Thailand itinerary.

History & Cultural Influence

Sukhothai (Sanskrit for "Dawn of Happiness") was founded in 1238 when two Thai princes liberated the region from the Khmer Empire. Under its greatest king, Ramkhamhaeng (1279–1298), Sukhothai became a 35,000 km² kingdom and the cradle of Thai language and writing — Ramkhamhaeng commissioned the first Thai alphabet in 1283. The kingdom's spiritual and aesthetic legacy is the Sukhothai Buddha style: graceful walking Buddhas, peaceful seated figures with flame-tipped ushnishas, and the most refined Buddhist sculpture in Thai history.

Sukhothai's zenith was brief — Ayutthaya absorbed the kingdom in 1438. But the city was never sacked, so the ruins are extraordinarily well preserved. Restoration began in the 1960s under royal patronage; UNESCO inscribed Sukhothai (along with the satellite cities of Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet) as a World Heritage Site in 1991. The annual Loy Krathong festival, born here, remains Thailand's most beautiful celebration.
