Udaipur Travel Guide: City of Lakes, Lake Palace & Mewar Heritage
Udaipur is India's most romantic city — the "Venice of the East," a 16th-century Rajput capital built around seven interlinked lakes in the heart of Rajasthan. The iconic white-marble Lake Palace floats on Lake Pichola; the massive City Palace cascades down a hillside above; and the surrounding Aravalli hills provide a soft mountain backdrop unlike any other Indian city. Founded in 1559 as the new Mewar Kingdom capital after the fall of Chittorgarh, Udaipur remains the spiritual home of Rajput chivalry, the world's longest unbroken royal lineage (76 generations), and one of India's most loved romantic-luxury destinations.

History & Cultural Influence
Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty, after Mughal armies sacked his ancestral capital at Chittorgarh. The new city, built around the artificial Lake Pichola, became the seat of the Mewar Kingdom — the only major Rajput state that successfully resisted Mughal conquest. The Maharanas of Mewar trace their lineage continuously back 1,400 years (since 530 CE), making theirs the longest unbroken royal line in the world.
The Lake Palace (Jag Niwas) was built in 1746 as a summer retreat for Maharana Jagat Singh II; in 1971 it was converted into the legendary Taj Lake Palace hotel — a 65-room marble icon that James Bond visited in Octopussy (1983). The City Palace is the largest royal complex in Rajasthan, occupying 4 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Pichola. Today the Mewar royal family — Arvind Singh Mewar and his son Lakshyaraj — still live in part of the City Palace and operate the family's heritage hotels (Shiv Niwas, Fateh Prakash) as the HRH Group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Helpful answers for first-timers planning an Udaipur stop on a Rajasthan tour.
How many days should I spend in Udaipur?
Three nights is ideal — one for the City Palace and Lake Pichola, one for Kumbhalgarh day trip, one for Bagore Ki Haveli and a sunset boat ride.
Is the Taj Lake Palace worth the price?
For honeymooners and once-in-a-lifetime travellers, absolutely — it's one of the world's most iconic hotels. Even a single night creates lifelong memories. If budget tight, take a Lake Pichola boat ride for the lake-palace view, then stay at a less expensive lakeside hotel.
When is the best time to visit Udaipur?
October to March for cool dry weather. February–March is the romantic peak with Mewar Festival and World Music Festival.
Udaipur or Jodhpur?
Udaipur is more romantic, with lakes and white marble palaces. Jodhpur is more rugged, with the Mehrangarh Fort and blue houses. Both are essential — most premium Rajasthan tours include both.
Can I see the Lake Palace without staying?
Yes — the Lake Palace is best viewed from a sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola, or from the City Palace ramparts. The interior is open only to hotel guests.
